Teaching Philosophy

My job as a voice teacher is to free my students’ voices.

Free from Vocal/Physical Hindrances.

A vital element of my practice is connecting singers with the primal function of their voices - communication. Calling out, crying, sighing, etc. are things we do naturally without over-complication. Contrastly, when we go to “sing,” we bring with us our own complex and often conflicting ideas of what singing is meant to feel or sound like. I aim to ensure that my students’ singing voices are optimally balanced in their glottal closure and sub-glottal breath pressure, are tension-free, and are as uniquely expressive as the singer.

Free from Expectations.

Each voice must be free from the student’s pre-existing expectations of what singing is supposed to feel or sound like. Most of us begin our vocal journeys as listeners. We hear the voices of singers we admire and yearn to recreate that sound or feeling ourselves. This is not a problem until it becomes one: when a student tries so hard to emulate someone else’s voice that they start making unhealthy vocal choices with their own. Each voice is unique with its own timbre and strengths.

A celebration of individuality.

I believe in celebrating the unique qualities of each voice and integrating them into the fabric of the lessons. I work with each student to collaboratively build a brave space in the studio where mistakes are welcomed as valuable learning experiences. The vocal warm-ups I choose for each student are thoughtfully selected and tailored just for them based on their goals and the demands of the songs we’ll be singing. Having been a classroom teacher for many years, my vocal instruction is accompanied by an acknowledgment and utilization of each singer’s learning style. I ask my singers to connect with the songs they sing and find a way to express the text in a way that feels honest to them. Finding the primal cause (motivation) of the song combined with years of technical expertise in building healthy, vibrant voices encourages a voice that functions freely, is able to respond musically and dramatically with thoughtful choices, and reflects the individuality of the singer.

Testimonials

“Aidan makes magic.”

Here’s what a few of my students are saying about our work together.

“Once, I had little to no confidence in my singing ability. But, within a two-year span of meeting and training with Aidan, I was able to book and sing solos in a legitimate off-Broadway, midtown, show! He is the kindest, most encouraging teacher and soul I have ever had the great fortune to meet.”

— Scott Zimmerman, full-time actor

“Aidan is a master of his craft! He is extremely knowledgeable about the anatomy and physiology of the voice and makes the technical aspects of singing accessible to all of his students. He has a way of transforming students and their voices within one lesson, so you can only imagine the magic that can happen if you go back for more! He has rightfully earned the praise: “AIDAN MAKES MAGIC!”

Aidan has worked with all levels of singers, from the very beginners all the way to stars gracing Broadway stages. He helps mold his students’ voices and builds their confidence to help them achieve their goals and, if they want, GRAB THOSE DREAM ROLES!!!

He is a RAY OF SUNSHINE who empathizes and empowers anyone who crosses his path. Voice lessons with Aidan are not only fun, but also influential, motivating, and healing!

— Olivia Lincoln, Stage Manager and singer

“Aidan is such an incredible voice teacher. He’s really skilled at assessing where and why I struggle in my vocal work, and creates exercises on the spot during our sessions to address those specific trouble spots, whatever they may be. And he is such a joy to work with! He is so supportive and celebrates all my wins and gains, no matter how big or small. I’ve made huge strides in my vocal skill since I started working with him, and the journey has been such a fun and rewarding experience!”

— Sharlene Morris, photographer and singer

“In addition to being a brilliant teacher, Aidan is a total gem! I couldn’t have asked for a better person to start taking my very first voice lessons with. As a composer, I was accustomed to staying behind the scenes, and terrified of performing onstage. Within just a few sessions, Aidan not only helped me tremendously improve my technique, but he also helped bring out a confidence that I didn’t even know I had! Thanks to his energy, support, and immense talent, you’ll always leave your lessons with a smile on your face. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend Aidan!”

- Julia Riew, composer/lyricist, writer

“Aidan nurtures me to reach the next level in my singing always and helps me understand how the voice is always evolving. In lessons, he givers me the tools to find grace and ease in the most challenging notes and songs and he does so by empowering me to own my truth in every moment. Training with Aidan is a true gift.”

— Emilee Dupré, First Wives Club (Broadway)

“I would not be the singer I am today without my lessons, nor would I have been able to book the Tina Turner National Tour. I walked into lessons with Aidan hoping to get a bit more confident in my abilities as a singer, but I walked out with so much more. In preparing for my Tina Tour audition I went from not believing I was capable of being in such a vocally rigorous show to fiercely tackling every hurdle in my way thanks to Aidan. Working through my audition cuts once a week in my sessions gave me the tools and confidence I needed to be my best self in the audition room. It truly is magic!”

- Reyna Guerra, TINA, The Tina Turner Musical National Tour
